Hair-Waving/Straightening Agents are chemicals which modify hair fibers to facilitate permanent configurational changes. The preferred components of hair-waving products are reducing agents which, at the proper pH, rupture disulfide linkages in hair. Strong alkalies or Reducing Agents can be used in hair-straightening products. If reducing agents are used for the processing of hair, the reduction step is followed by an oxidative (neutralization) step with an Oxidizing Agent or simply by exposure to air. If a strong alkali is used on hair, its application is commonly followed by treatment with a pH adjuster and extensive rinsing. |
