Sunscreen Agents are active ingredients used in (OTC) sunscreen products. In the U.S., in a final monograph published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, "Sunscreen Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use (64 Fed. Reg. 27666-93 May 21, 1999) a sunscreen is defined as an active ingredient that absorbs, reflects, or scatters radiation in the UV range at wavelengths from 290 to 400 nanometers. In the EU, sunscreen agents (referred to as UV Filters in Annex VII of the EU Cosmetic Directive) are considered to be cosmetics, yet are subject to pre-clearance or pre-market approval. In Japan, sunscreen agents may be regarded as drugs subject to pre-approval requirements. The listing below includes those ingredients reported to be safe and effective for use in U.S. over-the-counter (OTC) drug products as well as those identified by suppliers as sunscreen agents. These ingredients may also have a cosmetic purpose in cosmetic formulations. To identify the currently allowed sunscreen agents in the U.S., or for information on ingredient use limitations, etc., the reader is directed to contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the most recent information concerning this drug category. The U.S. approved drug ingredients are identified below with a star prefix. Whenever the U.S. drug name differs from the INCI name, the U.S. drug name is presented parenthetically. |
