These are cosmetic pigments which consist generally of an insoluble metallic salt of a certified color additive (see Color Additives - Batch Certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) deposited on an inert substrate, such as alumina. These lakes and their usage are subject to the color additive regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and must be certified for purity by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration prior to use. For the current approved uses, consult the color additive regulations, Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 74 to 82. The listing below includes the abbreviated INCI labeling names for colorants currently allowed for finished cosmetic product labeling.
