Biological Polymers do not form a chemically homogeneous class except for the fact that they are built up from naturally occurring monomers frequently of the Carbohydrate type. Included are materials obtained from edible grains, and animal products. Biological polymers can be used as originally obtained from their source, e.g., Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, or may be chemically modified to alter solubility and swelling characteristics, e.g., Glyceryl Starch. Biological polymers are used in cosmetics as inert fillers (e.g., Cellulose) and as water absorbent non-swelling solids, e.g., Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch. Some of these polymers are used as viscosity increasing hydrophilic swelling agents (e.g., Hyaluronic Acid), and as film formers.
